Gulfs apart
October 22, 2004
It’s difficult to find the time to continue updating blogs during travel, especially when on a multi-leg journey, and even when there is so much to say.
A visit to the Gulf and the Levant over the last couple of weeks reminded me of the other gulf, the one between opposite ends of the Middle East: one awash with money, whose rulers live in obscene wealth but at least spend reasonable amounts on very visible public infrastructure and projects; the other, awash with another kind of money, whose rulers also live in obscene wealth which remains their exclusive property, while the population can only watch in despair.
